Party Games With No Props or Cards: 7 Ideas

A group of friends playing a party game with nothing but their phone and their voices

You can play many party games with nothing but your group: Two Truths and a Lie, charades, 20 Questions, Would You Rather and Story Chain all need only voices and imagination. If you want a game with a bit more structure, a one-phone game such as Wild Imposter needs just a single phone passed around.

Which party games need nothing at all?

These games need no cards, board, pen or paper. They work in a car, on a terrace, at a family function or while waiting for the food to arrive. Several of them appear in lists of games that need no equipment (one list, another).

Game How it works Best for
Two Truths and a Lie One person says three statements about themselves, two true and one false. Others guess the lie. Small groups; new friends
Would You Rather Someone offers two awkward choices. Everyone picks and explains. Any size; icebreaker
Charades Act out a word or film without speaking. Others guess. Medium or large groups
20 Questions One person thinks of something. Others ask yes/no questions to guess it. Any size; car rides
Story Chain Each person adds a sentence to a shared story. Creative groups
Contact and similar word games Players try to guess a hidden word through indirect clues. Groups who like word play

How do you play Two Truths and a Lie?

Each person takes a turn to say three things about themselves. Two are true and one is false. The rest of the group questions them and then votes on which one is the lie. It works best when the true statements are surprising, so the lie is hard to spot.

How do you play 20 Questions?

One person secretly thinks of an object, person or place. Everyone else can ask up to 20 questions that can be answered only with yes or no. If the group guesses within 20, they win. Otherwise the thinker wins. In India it is easy to make it local: think of a famous place, a cricketer or a street food.

What if we want something with more tension?

The no-props games above are mostly storytelling or guessing games. If your group enjoys bluffing and arguing, look for a social-deduction game that gives each person a secret role or word. That is why many groups use a phone.

Imposter-style games on one phone

In an imposter game, everyone is shown a secret word except one player, the imposter. Players describe the word in turn without saying it and then vote on who is faking. See our full guide to playing the imposter game.

Wild Imposter is our version, a web game with these features:

It needs a phone, so it is not strictly a "nothing" game, but there is no sign-up step and no extra equipment. Open it at imposter.anantagi.com.

How do I choose the right game?

Where does Wild Imposter fit if you want one game for the whole evening?

Most groups mix it in rather than replace the no-prop games entirely - play a round of Would You Rather or 20 Questions while people are still arriving, then switch to Wild Imposter once everyone is settled and ready for something with more back-and-forth. The pass-the-phone format also means nobody needs to download anything or make an account, same as the games above.

Tips to make no-prop games work

  1. Pick someone to start and keep time. Without props, games can drift.
  2. Keep rounds short. Switch games before people lose interest.
  3. Make the topics local. Use Bollywood, cricket, food and regional references your group knows.
  4. Let people pass. Nobody should feel forced to answer.
