How to Play the Imposter Game: Rules, Steps and Setup
The imposter game is a word-bluffing party game for 3 or more people. Everyone is shown the same secret word except the imposter, who gets no word and must pretend to know it. Players take turns describing the word without saying it, then vote on who is faking. You can play with one phone passed around, no board, no cards.
What is the imposter game?
It is a social-deduction game, in the same family as "word spy" or "spy" party games. One or more players are secretly the imposter. Everyone else knows a secret word. The group wins if it finds the imposter. The imposter wins if they escape.
The general format is common across many apps and home versions: a secret word, a round of clues, a discussion and a vote (general format described here). Different apps change small details, so always check the rules of the version you use. This guide uses the rules of Wild Imposter, Anant AGI's own free browser game, and says when something is specific to it.
What do you need to play?
- 3 or more players (Wild Imposter will not start with fewer than 3, and allows up to 20)
- One phone with a browser
- A group that is ready to talk and laugh
You do not need paper, cards, a board or a separate "game master".
How do you play, step by step?
1. Set up the players
Add everyone's name. In Wild Imposter you tap a name to edit it, and hold and drag to change the turn order. Pick a category of words (for example food, animals, movies, tech) and a "vibe" (see the table below).
2. Pass the phone and reveal the word
The phone says whose turn it is. Each player holds a card to reveal their own screen. Normal players see the secret word. The imposter sees the word "IMPOSTER" instead. The screen reminds you that only you should see it, so shield it from others, then pass it to the next player.
3. Describe the word, one by one
Going in turn, each player says something about the word without saying the word itself. If the word is "Biryani", you might say "Hyderabad" or "dum", not "biryani". The imposter has to guess from the other clues and bluff something that fits.
Tip for clues: be specific enough that real players recognise each other, but vague enough that the imposter cannot copy you.
4. Discuss, then vote
Wild Imposter has a discussion timer you can switch on. The default shown on the page is 60 seconds, you can pause it, and "+30s" adds time. When the group is ready, press "Start Voting". Each person taps who they think the imposter is and locks the vote.
5. See who won
The app reveals the imposter(s) and the secret word. If the most-voted player is an imposter, the group wins. If not, the imposter wins. Press "Play again" for a new round with a new word.
How many imposters should there be?
Wild Imposter lets you choose Auto or 1 to 4 imposters. It caps the number so the imposters never reach half the group. The limit is roughly half the players rounded up, minus one:
| Players | Maximum imposters |
|---|---|
| 3 to 4 | 1 |
| 5 to 6 | 2 |
| 7 to 8 | 3 |
| 9 or more | 4 |
If you are new, start with one imposter.
What are the "vibes" and categories?
Wild Imposter has four vibes that decide which words can appear:
| Vibe | Meant for |
|---|---|
| Family | Clean words, suitable with parents, kids and relatives |
| Friends | Friendship and everyday-life words |
| Party | Party and night-out themes |
| Wild | Dark humour and adult words. The app asks everyone to confirm they are 18+ |
Categories include Foods and Drinks, Animals, Sports, Movies and TV, Everyday, Travel, India Special, and Tech and Internet. Some categories unlock only at higher vibes.
What is the imposter hint?
It is an optional setting. When on, the imposter gets one short clue related to the word, to help them blend in. Turn it off for a harder game.
Common questions about the rules
Can the imposter win by guessing the word?
In some other versions of the game, yes. In Wild Imposter, there are only two outcomes: the imposter is caught, or the imposter escapes.
What if nobody votes or there is a tie?
Players can skip voting. If no votes are cast, the group decides. If the top vote is tied, the group counts as winning when any of the tied top players is an imposter.
FAQ
How many people do you need for the imposter game?
At least 3. Wild Imposter supports up to 20 players on one phone.
Do I need to download an app?
Wild Imposter runs in the browser at imposter.anantagi.com. It is also set up as a web app, so on many phones you can add it to your home screen. It has no sign-up screen.
Is the imposter game free?
At the time of writing, Wild Imposter has no sign-up or payment step. Other apps with the same idea may charge, so check each one.
Is it suitable for kids and family?
Use the Family vibe for clean words. Wild is for adults only, and the app asks for confirmation first.
How long does a round take?
It depends on the group. Reveal time scales with the number of players, plus a discussion timer of roughly 45 to 90 seconds depending on the vibe. These are the app's default timers, not a measured round length.
About the game
Wild Imposter is a pass-the-phone party game made by the team at Anant AGI, with Indian words and references (dosti, chai, India Special) alongside general ones. It is a small project that sits next to our business software work. More games will be listed at our games page.
